Melody MacDuffee and the Story of Soul of Somanya

A fascinating story and shopping too! What more could you ask for?

Join us as Melody MacDuffee tells of her journey with Soul of Somanya, a fair-trade non-profit. It all began when a group of Krobo artisans came across an article in Bead & Button featuring Melody MacDuffee. They emailed her asking if she could come to Ghana and teach them her skills. Six months later, lugging six suitcases filled with jewelry-making tools and supplies, Melody was on her way to Ghana.

Today, in an environment where job prospects are quite limited, Soul of Somanya artisans earn a steady, living wage in a healthy, pleasant working environment doing something they enjoy…creating jewelry and other beaded products. Hear the story of how this all came to be AND have an opportunity to see and shop their products.

** Visit Melody’s trunk show online on January 21 and in person on Saturday, February 24 from 1-4 at the Lexington Community Center. Melody will be bringing a lively trunk show of colorful West African beads and purses with her, as well as beautiful cabochons and stone pendants, so come prepared to shop!**

Author of four books (three of them on wirework) and five wire-work booklets, Melody has taught her distinctive jewelry-making techniques all over the U.S. and as far away as Morocco and West Africa. Her Craftsy instructional video, Filigree Jewelry with a Twist! came out in 2015, and she is a regular guest artist on Jewelry Television’s Jewel School. Melody was the winner of Bead & Button’s 2019 Bead Dreams Grand Award in the wire category. Melody is also the co-founder and director of Soul of Somanya, a fair-trade non-profit that offers paid training and steady, living wage employment to disadvantaged Ghanaian artisans.
