Mainland Chinese Beadwork, 1850-2010

Although Chinese people have been making beadwork for several thousand years, few ancient pieces have survived. After showing several ancient examples, Valerie will focus on beadwork made from ca. 1850-2010, including articles of home decor and items made to be worn.

In this brief overview of a largely undocumented topic, Valerie will share images of rich, colorful objects including bead curtains, beaded table screens, beaded slippers, headbands, baby carrier panels and hair ornaments – along with a few beaded rosary beads. Valerie’s presentation concludes with contemporary Chinese bead polyhedra and small beaded figures and toys.
