Joyce J Scott 2025

Spend an evening with Joyce J Scott, our speaker at BDI’s January Member Meeting on Wednesday, January 15, 2025. Joyce is an acclaimed Baltimore artist who for over three decades has elevated the possibilities of beadwork as a relevant contemporary art form.

Scott’s work comments on issues affecting contemporary society to bring about awareness and response. Of her own work, Scott says, “I believe in messing with stereotypes…It’s important for me to use art in a manner that incites people to look and then carry something home – even if it’s subliminal…”

And did you know Joyce is also a highly entertaining speaker and storyteller?  She will tell us about the artistic roots in her family and will share her work and the stories behind them. Joyce combines strong social commentary with a sharp yet warm sense of humor – this is a talk you don’t want to miss.

MacArthur Fellow Dr. Joyce J. Scott uses off-loom hand-threaded beads and blown glass to create arresting jewelry, figurative sculptures, and wall hangings informed by her African American ancestry, the craft traditions of her family (including her quilter mother Elizabeth T. Scott), and traditional Native American techniques, such as the peyote stitch.

She received a BFA (1970) from Maryland Institute College of Art, an MFA (1971) from the Instituto Allende in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, and training from her mother, Elizabeth T. Scott, who was an internationally recognized fiber artist. She was awarded an honorary fellowship from NYU, as well as honorary doctorates from MICA, the California College of the Arts and Johns Hopkins University. Scott is a 2016 fellow of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.

Joyce’s work is in numerous museum collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Baltimore Museum of Art, Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts, the Fuller Craft Museum, the Smithsonian, the National Museum of American Art and many others.
