Beyond Brilliance: Jewelry at the MFA, Boston
As summer slides into fall, are you up for a little sparkle and glitter? Then join us as BDI’s programming year opens with Emily Stoehrer from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Some additional resources are listed below, but don’t miss this chance to hear Emily’s talk followed by Q&A time.
The MFA’s jewelry collection includes works of art made over thousands of years by artists working around the globe. In May, the Rita J. And Stanley H. Kaplan Family Foundation Gallery reopened after a complete renovation. The redesigned gallery, a permanent space where you can come back again and again to visit your favorite jewels, is one of just a few like it in the world.
In this dynamic virtual tour, join Emily Stoehrer (Rita J. Kaplan and Susan B. Kaplan Senior Curator of Jewelry) will guide you through the dazzling display and share insights into the curatorial and design process.

As the Rita J. Kaplan and Susan B. Kaplan Curator of Jewelry at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Dr. Emily Stoehrer is an international presence in the jewelry field. At the MFA she oversees a collection that spans 6,000 years and includes more than 22,000 objects—highlights include ancient jewelry, a growing collection of nineteenth and twentieth-century high-style jewelry, and the Daphne Farago Collection of contemporary jewelry.
A leader in the field, Emily served as a member of the Board of Directors for the Society of North American Goldsmiths from 2017 until 2020 and is currently the spokesperson of the jewelry vetting committee of both of The European Fine Art Fairs (TEFAF). Emily’s academic work has focused on the history of material culture and the philosophy of identity. She is particularly interested in the evolution of taste and her dissertation focused on the influence of the Hollywood red carpet.
