Hayden Peters is a jewellery historian, scholar, designer, and collector specialising in mourning and sentimental jewellery, fashion and art. In 2005 Art of Mourning was founded as an educational platform for mourning jewellery, fashion and art between 1517–1940. It features 900+ articles and reaches thousands of international readers daily. With over 25 years of collecting and research, his work has been published and he has appeared in global media.

Values of 17th-19th century mourning custom and fashion were important to represent social, religious and political views. The cost of fashionable mourning was almost as high as the loss of a loved one and the requirements of mourning costume and jewels led families into debt. Learn about how these customs became part of family behaviour and how businesses profited from loss.
Using primary resources of mourning jewels, this lecture will focus on the evolution of jewelry design from the 17th century onwards, offering insights into the lifestyles of the people who wore mourning jewels and those who made them.
