I have been fascinated by seed beads since childhood, and as a child spent many happy hours making rings and simple animals from beads and wire. Some years ago, in the midst of the beading boom, I noticed that several publications were devoted to seed bead and wire creatures of the sort I used to make. But I didn’t see a dragon anywhere. I decided that it would be fun (and a blast from the past) to make a wire dragon. It was fun, and I became obsessed with perfecting the design. It took about six months to come up with the final balance—the optimum size and number of beads and gauge of wire to allow the dragon to sit sturdily without drooping over time. I also enjoyed trying out a variety of color combinations. The final adult dragon pattern was published in Beadwork magazine in the Feb/March 2004 issue.
