Art in many forms have always been a large part of my life. I am a musician by training (specializing in Renaissance and Baroque music), but remember doing simple beading as a young child as well. I still have my “special” jar of my most prized beads from my childhood, that I just couldn’t use, as I loved looking at them as one treasure.
My daughter, who is now a young adult, took an after-school program during her elementary years, on beading. I distinctly remember her coming home one day after a session, and saying to me, “Mom, you really should try this. It’s so much fun!” So, we bought a few supplies, and my then 8-year-old sat me down and taught me what she had been learning. It was basic stringing, not weaving, but she was right, it was fun! And before I knew it, I was hooked! I started reading more about beading and learning new techniques. Later that year, I discovered BDI, and that opened my beading world even more.
Fast forward 15 years, and I find myself expanding my beading horizons. I’ve learned so much from BDI members, the presenters at our members meetings, and the teachers at our workshops. I’m now doing lots of different weaving with seed beads and learning new techniques I never would have felt comfortable doing without encouragement from everyone at BDI. My beading has led me to start a business (Beads by Beardslee), as well as become involved in other arts groups in my community. I’m the current President of ArtsMedford, and a founding member of Arts Collaborative Medford, which was formed to bring an arts center to the city of Medford (and the center will be opening soon—hopefully by the end of this year).
I’ve been honored to be Chair of Beadesigner International this year, after being the membership chair the year prior. It’s such a fun, warm, sharing group, and even during the challenging times of the pandemic, I feel like we’ve made lemonade out of lemons! And because wearing one hat just isn’t enough for me(!), I’m also the Co-Coordinator for Bead Affaire, sharing the reins with Pamela Healy.
If I am re-elected, I promise to keep helping to move BDI forward, and continue to bring my enthusiasm, ideas, and knowledge to the group. It’s been such a pleasure and privilege.
