California Poppy Worshop with Cliff Swain-Salomon

Sat September 23, 2023 @ 11:00 am - 5:00 pm

Cliff Swain-Salomon is an off-the-loom seed bead weaver known for creating non-traditional jewelry shapes and pushing the boundaries of color exploration. After injuring and losing use of both of his hands for over three years, he began beading when a friend recommended he try it as part of his hand rehabilitation therapy. Once he started, he was hooked.

In all of his pieces, Cliff integrates over 30 years of study in multiple fields, including graphic design, painting, sacred geometry, and chromotherapy, as well as apprenticeships with several medicine men and women.

Cliff’s beadwork has earned him international recognition and numerous awards. See his website to learn more about his awards and for more examples of his amazing work www.cssfineart.com . Cliff is married with a 5 year-old daughter and lives in California, near San Francisco.

California Poppy Workshop with Cliff Swain-Salomon

In this workshop, you have the option of creating California Poppy earrings or a chenille chain necklace with a double Poppy pendant. Two colorways are available for the poppy – orange and red.

Matsuno and Miyuki beads give each petal its signature, subtle shapes and luscious glow. The flowers can be beaded to be more open or more bud-like, and the twisting stem adds a bit of artistic flair and grace to the overall piece.

Growing up, Cliff’s favorite wildflower—growing right in his own backyard—was the California Poppy. He loved its structure, from the beautiful wedge shaped petals, to the perfectly circular receptacle at the base of the petals, to the frond shaped leaves and the long straight stalks.

This pattern is the first collaboration between Cliff and his husband David, based on their shared love of this flower with its unique shape and delightful orange (a favorite) color!

Required supplies and instructions are included in the kit. Cliff supplies beading thread, either One-G or KO. He doesn’t recommend Fireline, but for Fireline devotees, no more than 4 LB Fireline. The thread will show, so choose Fireline accordingly.

Students should provide their favorite beading needle.

Includes 1 hour break for lunch.

Cost to Member: $50 plus cost of kit (earring kit $45, necklace kit $75)

Cost to Nonmember: $80 plus cost of kit (earring kit $45, necklace kit $75)
