Spiny Knotted Necklace Workshop with Stephanie Sersich

Sat November 18, 2023 @ 10:00 am - 4:30 pm

Stephanie Sersich is a fiber-artist, jewelry designer and glass beadmaker. While she works in several media, her signature jewelry incorporates a mixture of her own lampwork beads, vintage glass, ethnic beads, natural materials and fibers. The “Spiny Knotting” technique she developed allows more beads and small treasures to be bound into a single piece, so each one of the “ingredients” adds a distinct energy that works to complement all the others.

Stephanie lives on the coast of Maine and loves to spend time in her garden and studio, combining different colors and textures, whether beady or floral. For more information and more of Stephanie’s work, visit her website.

Spiny Knotted Necklace Workshop with Stephanie Sersich

Take your Spiny Knotting skills to the next level! This workshop is for students who have completed Stephanie’s Spiny Knotted Bracelet class, can compile their own materials, and are ready to apply the technique to create necklaces with centerpieces and more complex textures.

In this workshop, we’ll use floss and waxed linen to bind beads and other treasures into a necklace. The materials and methods provide an opportunity for self-expression—there is no pattern to follow, the beads can vary in size, color and shape.

Each student in the class creates a necklace different from the others’. To see more jewelry made with the Spiny Knotting technique, visit Stephanie’s website www.sssbeads.com.

Stephanie will be very happy to help students select materials. If you need help selecting materials, please have a color scheme in mind and be in touch – Stephanie@nullsssbeads.com.

Set up at 9:30, class starts at 10 with a break for lunch.

Materials/Tools to Bring

  • 400 – 500 assorted beads, 6-8 shapes and sizes
  • 2 skeins perle cotton (or embroidery thread)
  • 20-25 yds. waxed linen – available for purchase from Stephanie
  • button
  • tapestry needle
  • beadboard and t-pins
  • scissors
  • task lamp (optional)
*For use in class, Stephanie will have general supplies such as bead boards, scissors and needles) but hopes that you bring your own if you have them.

Some tips:

  • When selecting beads, keep in mind that all the bead holes need to be large enough for the waxed linen to go through.
  • Using a variety of bead shapes and sizes creates a rich texture. Choose beads that range in size from a few millimeters to a centimeter.
  • Beads that dangle off, like charms or shells work well for this project.
  • It would be helpful to bring a few little trays to keep your beads separated (the lids from yogurt containers are ideal).
